Plan 01
1 day in Hogenakkal
- 01
Day 1: Falls, coracle and fish
Leave Bengaluru or Dharmapuri early to reach the falls by mid-morning. Start on the decks and the hanging bridge to see the layout, then check at the counter whether coracle rides and bathing are open. Take the ride if you are comfortable in a small spinning boat, then bathe only in the railed areas. Have a late fish lunch at the riverside stalls, and visit the crocodile centre and medicinal garden if open that day. Leave before the afternoon traffic.
Plan 02
2 days in Hogenakkal
- 01
Day 1: The falls
Reach in the morning and cover the decks, bridge, coracle ride and bathing area at a relaxed pace. Eat fish by the river and rest in the shade of the crocodile centre gardens. Stay overnight in Dharmapuri or nearby, checking where you can book a room in advance.
- 02
Day 2: Hill temple or dam
Choose between Theerthamalai in Harur taluk, where a steep climb of about a kilometre leads to the Shiva temple and its springs, or Mettur Dam downstream on the Kaveri. Either is a separate drive, so pick one and keep the afternoon free.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Theerthamalai (Theerthagireeswarar Temple) Half a day including the drive Demanding Weekday mornings outside festival days Pace: Theerthamalai (Theerthagireeswarar Temple) involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.
With parents at Theerthamalai (Theerthagireeswarar Temple): The temple stands about a kilometre up a steep slope, with steps and uneven ground. Crowds on weekends and festival days make it harder. Not recommended for those with limited mobility unless help is arranged.

Guides for the stops on these routes
Pacing
Pacing a Hogenakkal trip for parents and children
- Check whether bathing and coracle rides are open before you set out; floods can suspend both at short notice.
- Start with the decks and watchtower rather than the riverbank; the view is the point and the effort is small.
- Paths and steps near the water stay wet and uneven, so wear shoes with grip and bring a stick if you use one.
- Skip the coracle ride if balance or knees are poor; the boat is low and spins gently, and life jackets are compulsory.
- Avoid weekends, school holidays and festival days such as Adi 18; crowds make footing and queues harder.
- Carry drinking water, a hat and a dry change of clothes; shade is limited at midday.
