Before you go

Hubballi-Dharwad with elderly parents: what to know

  • Plan one or two main stops a day and rest after lunch.
  • Unkal Lake and the Glass House Garden are level with seating; Siddharoodha Math is best outside festival days.
  • Avoid April and May afternoons, when temperatures reach the mid-30s.
  • Travel between Hubballi and Dharwad by car; the distance is about 20 km.
  • Day trips to Kittur and Attiveri involve longer drives; start early and carry water.
  • Hubli Airport is only about 8 km from the city centre, which makes arrival easy.

Easiest first

Places in Hubballi-Dharwad sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (7)

  • Attiveri Bird Sanctuary (Places to visit · Half a day, including travel) — The walking is gentle, but there is little seating or shade and the nearest facilities are in Mundgod. The road includes rural stretches. Good for seniors who enjoy quiet bird watching and can manage a long car journey.
  • Chandramouleshwara Temple, Unkal (Culture and craft · 45 minutes) — Mostly level, but the ground can be uneven and the site has little seating. Easy for seniors who can manage a short, shaded walk.
  • Dharwad Fort (Places to visit · 30 to 45 minutes) — Short and mostly level around the gate, but pavements are uneven, traffic is close and there is little seating or shade. Suits seniors who are happy with a short roadside look.
  • Dharwad Pedha at Line Bazaar (Food and restaurants · 20 to 30 minutes) — A short shop visit with little walking. Sweet and rich, so older diners should watch portions.
  • Indira Gandhi Glass House Garden (Places to visit · 45 to 60 minutes) — Level, paved paths and benches in a shaded garden. A comfortable break for older travellers.
  • Siddharoodha Math (Places of worship · 1 to 1.5 hours) — Largely level with queues at busy times. Footwear is removed. Better in the cooler hours, and busy during the jatre.
  • Unkal Lake (Places to visit · 1 to 2 hours) — Largely level with paths around the park and places to sit. It can be busy and noisy at weekends. A good option for older visitors.

Practical tips for Hubballi-Dharwad

  • Heat. April and May reach the mid-30s Celsius. Keep sightseeing to mornings and evenings.
  • Monsoon. June to September is rainy; day trips to Attiveri are less rewarding then and roads can be muddy.
  • Getting around. Autos and cabs work within each city. A hired car makes the Hubballi-Dharwad run and day trips easier.
  • Walking. Most city sights are level, but pavements are uneven. Wear comfortable footwear.
  • Money. Cards and UPI work in established shops; carry cash for autos and temples.
  • Dress. Dress modestly at the math and temples and remove footwear at the shrine.
  • Festivals. Siddharoodha Jatre in February or March brings very large crowds; plan around it if you dislike crowds.
  • Food. Local food is spicy. Ask for less chilli, and drink bottled or filtered water.
