Why it matters

Why Perfume River Cruise is worth your time

The river explains Hue's setting. It defines the city, it carried the court's boats and goods, and the tombs and pagodas upstream were placed to be reached along it. Taking a boat shows the landscape as the Nguyen emperors and their court knew it.

Wikipedia notes that, according to the traditional explanation, autumn flowers from orchards upriver fall into the water and give it its name; the same source says the river basin has Vietnam's highest rainfall. That is the reason to avoid the wet season and floods.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Choose your trip before you go. A short cruise stays in town and passes Truong Tien Bridge and the citadel walls; a longer one goes upstream past farms and orchards to Thien Mu and, in some trips, to tombs such as Minh Mang and Tu Duc. Wikivoyage notes that rented boats are a common way to reach the tombs.

Sit on the shaded side. Many of the tourist boats are brightly painted dragon boats, but the riverside villages, flower gardens and sandbanks matter more than the boat. The Perfume River is about 30 km long and moves very slowly, according to Wikipedia, so the ride is calm in the dry season.

Agree the total price, the stops and the return time with the operator before you board. Avoid the river during or just after heavy rain or floods, when schedules change and currents are stronger. Take a hat, water and a light layer.
