Why it matters

Why Vihigaon (Ashoka) Waterfall is worth your time

Vihigaon shows what the monsoon does to the Sahyadri edge: dry hillsides turn into a patchwork of streams and falls within weeks. It is among the better-known easy monsoon visits from Mumbai and Nashik, and is close enough to the highway to fit a day trip.

It is also a reminder that tourism has reached villages that offer little infrastructure. Visiting respectfully, carrying out your rubbish and paying the local fee supports the community and keeps the site usable. The falls also show how quickly crowd pressure builds on a short, easy site. A weekday visit, a small fee paid to the village and a bag of your own rubbish carried out are the simplest ways to be a considerate visitor, and they make the experience safer and more pleasant for everyone.

How to experience it

Vihigaon waterfall, also called Vihi or Ashoka Waterfall, is about 12 km from Kasara. From the highway, you turn off about 7 km after Kasara and drive roughly 5 km to the car park; shared jeeps run from Kasara station. From the car park it is about a five-minute walk to the waterfall.

The falls are seasonal and are at their best from July to September. The surroundings are rice fields, small hills, check dams and forest. The waterfall is popular for rappelling with licensed operators; if you are interested, book in advance and check safety equipment.

The village has no restaurants or hotels, so carry food, water and a rain jacket. Weekends in the monsoon draw large crowds, and the Gram Panchayat charges modest entry and parking fees. For safety, stay out of fast-flowing water and avoid slippery edges.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Go on a weekday to avoid crowds
  • Carry food, water and a rain jacket
  • Pay the Gram Panchayat entry and parking fee
  • Stay out of fast water and off slippery edges
  • Book rappelling only with an operator who shows safety gear
