Krishnapura Chhatris: what visitors should know first
Yes, for a quiet half hour of fine stone carving close to the old city. It is not a big site. Go in good light, keep expectations modest about the riverside, and check that the gate is open.
History and context
The story behind Krishnapura Chhatris
Wikipedia dates the chhatris to about 1849, after the Holkars came under British East India Company protection following the collapse of Maratha power in 1818. The complex has three chhatris containing five cenotaphs. Clean-up efforts began in 2018, and the site has since been included on a walking tour of historic Indore.

Why it matters
Why Krishnapura Chhatris is worth your time
Krishnapura gives a visible record of Holkar rule after 1818, when the dynasty settled into its protected status under the British. The chhatris were built around 1849, are named after Krishna Bai Holkar, wife of Yashwantrao Holkar, and mark cremation sites of members of the ruling family. They show Maratha funerary architecture in carved stone, a type of monument common across central and western India.
For travellers, it matters because it is one of the few places where you can see how the Holkars commemorated their dead, and because it is close to Rajwada. It also shows how a city that is now celebrated for cleanliness has had to work at looking after old monuments.

How to experience it
The easiest way to reach the site is on foot from Rajwada, about half a kilometre away; ask directions rather than rely on the map, since lanes are narrow. Start with the outside of the main chhatri and walk around it before going in. The stone is carved with panels, figures and decorated columns, and a Ganesha figure appears on the structure.
Inside, look up at the dome and across at the pillars. A marble Nandi, Shiva's bull, rests on a raised platform within the complex. The details are the point; there is no museum labelling to rely on, so read about the dynasty first, or bring a guide.
The Khan river alongside is not a pretty sight, and the site was in poor repair for years before clean-up work started in 2018. Go for the carving, keep the visit short, and carry on to the rest of the old city.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
- Walk from Rajwada and ask locally for the entrance
- Visit in daylight
- Do not climb on the monuments
