Indore is the largest city in Madhya Pradesh and the commercial heart of the Malwa plateau. It rose under the Holkar dynasty: Malhar Rao Holkar was appointed Maratha chief of Malwa in 1730, and in 1766 his daughter-in-law Ahilyabai Holkar moved the capital from Kampel to Indore. Her reign is remembered as a golden age of temple building across central India, and her name is still everywhere in the city, from the airport to the statue outside Rajwada.

The sights are modest in number but varied. Rajwada, the seven-storey Holkar palace, and the later, European-style Lalbagh Palace show two sides of the dynasty. Kanch Mandir, a Jain temple covered in glass, and the Khajrana Ganesh Temple show the city's devotional life. The Central Museum holds sculpture from the Parmar period. None of this takes more than a day or two, which suits a relaxed trip.

What sets Indore apart is food. Sarafa Bazaar, a jewellery market by day, turns into a night food court after the jewellers close, and Chhappan Dukan in Palasia offers a tidier, car-free alternative. Poha-jalebi, dahi bade, kachori, bhutte ka kees and kulfi are the staples. The city has also been ranked repeatedly as India's cleanest, which makes walking around easier than in many large cities.

Indore works well as a base. Ujjain, Mandu, Maheshwar and Omkareshwar are all within a day's drive, each with its own page on Raahzo. For parents and older travellers, the city is flat, has good hospitals and hotels, and rewards a rhythm of one outing in the morning, rest in the afternoon, and food in the evening.

Food to try in Indore

Food and restaurants · 2 guides

Indore's food is built around Malwa tastes: poha with jalebi for breakfast, kachori and samosa as snacks, and a taste for fried and sweet-savoury combinations. Dahi bade, bhutte ka kees (grated corn cooked with milk and spices), malpua, rabri and kulfi are the other staples. Most traditional food is vegetarian, and the city has a large Jain population, so Jain-style food is easy to find.

Two places define the street scene. Sarafa Bazaar is a jewellery market that turns into a night food court after about 8 pm, with long-running names such as Joshi's dahi bade. Chhappan Dukan in Palasia has 56 small shops along a pedestrian street and is calmer and easier for families. For both, go early, choose busy stalls with hot food, drink bottled water and share small portions. For a sit-down meal, ask your hotel for recommendations, since restaurant standards vary.

Shopping in Indore

Shopping

Indore's old centre around Rajwada is a working market: cloth, utensils, jewellery and everyday goods fill the lanes. The Sarafa area is the jewellery district, and many shops there close in the evening before the food stalls open. Bargaining is normal in small shops but not in fixed-price stores.

For gifts, the best choices are food: savoury namkeen, sweets and dry snacks from established counters, which travel well. Maheshwar, a day trip, is known for woven sarees and fabrics, and Mandu for local crafts; buy those at source if you go. For jewellery or textiles, ask for proper bills and compare shops before paying.

Choose without overthinking

Which Indore experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Sarafa Bazaar or Chhappan Dukan?

Choose Chhappan Dukan if you travel with children or parents: it is a pedestrian street with a tidy layout and daytime hours. Choose Sarafa Bazaar for the late-night atmosphere and the famous stalls, and go early in the evening.

Rajwada Palace or Lalbagh Palace?

Rajwada is older, Maratha in style and in the middle of the old city, with the market lanes outside. Lalbagh is later, Italianate and quieter, with gardens. If you have time for one, pick Rajwada for the city's story and Lalbagh for the architecture.

Khajrana Ganesh Temple or Bada Ganpati?

Khajrana is a larger, busier temple with a stronger local following. Bada Ganpati is a quick stop notable for its tall idol. Go to Khajrana for devotion and Bada Ganpati for a short visit.

Stay in the old centre or in Vijay Nagar?

The old centre gives you walkable sights and food but noise and crowds. Vijay Nagar and Palasia offer newer hotels and easier road access, with a short drive to the sights.

Ujjain, Mandu, Maheshwar and Omkareshwar are each a long day by road. Leave early and avoid combining more than one in a day.

Indore with elderly parents: what to know

  • Plan one main outing in the morning and rest after lunch. Indore is flat, but the heat and crowds can be tiring.
  • Go to Sarafa Bazaar early in the evening and with a companion. Chhappan Dukan is a calmer first food stop.
