Plan 01

1 day in Indore

  1. 01

Day 1: Palace, temples and a night food walk

Start at Rajwada Palace in the morning, then walk the short distance to the Krishnapura Chhatris. Visit Kanch Mandir in Itwaria Bazar on the way back toward your car. After lunch and a rest, spend an hour at the Central Museum, which is quiet and indoors. In the evening, go to Sarafa Bazaar after the jewellers close for poha-jalebi, dahi bade and kulfi, and keep your portions small.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Rajwada Palace1 hour inside; 20 minutes for the exteriorModerateMorning, October to March
Krishnapura Chhatris30 to 45 minutesEasyMorning or late afternoon
    Kanch Mandir30 to 45 minutesEasyMorning
Sarafa Bazaar1.5 to 2 hoursEasyEvening, after the jewellers close (around 8 pm)

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Rajwada Palace: Expect steps and some uneven floors in an old building, and a crowded, noisy square outside. Ask staff which floors are open and whether a lift or ramp is available. A car drop-off at the front is easier than walking from the market lanes.

Plan 02

2 days in Indore

    Day 1: The Holkar city

Begin with Rajwada Palace and the Krishnapura Chhatris, then visit Kanch Mandir. Break for lunch and rest. In the afternoon, go to Lalbagh Palace by car and walk the gardens, then visit the Central Museum if time allows. End with an early evening snack at Chhappan Dukan, which is easier than the night lanes.

Day 2: Temples, a wetland and Sarafa

Go early to Khajrana Ganesh Temple on a weekday to avoid the longest queues, and stop at Bada Ganpati and Annapurna Temple on the same run. In the cooler months, do a morning at Sirpur Lake instead if you prefer birds to temples. Rest after lunch, then spend the evening at Sarafa Bazaar.

Guides for the stops on these routes

Pacing

Pacing a Indore trip for parents and children

  • Plan one main outing in the morning and rest after lunch. Indore is flat, but the heat and crowds can be tiring.
  • Go to Sarafa Bazaar early in the evening and with a companion. Chhappan Dukan is a calmer first food stop.
  • Temples such as Khajrana Ganesh and Kanch Mandir involve queues and bare feet. Go on a weekday morning and ask about shorter lines.
  • Lalbagh Palace and the Central Museum are the most comfortable sights, with level paths and shade or indoor space.
  • Hire a car and driver for the day. Old-city lanes are crowded, and a car gives you a place to rest.
  • From April to June, avoid midday outings. November to February is far easier.
