The short answer
Ipoh Railway Station: what visitors should know first
Yes, even if you are not catching a train. The facade takes twenty minutes to enjoy, it is flat and easy, and it anchors the Old Town walk. If you are coming from Kuala Lumpur by ETS, you arrive right at the start of the sights.
History and context
The story behind Ipoh Railway Station
The first Ipoh station opened in 1893. The present building, designed by Arthur Benison Hubback and officially opened in 1917, is Moorish Revival or Indo-Saracenic with some late Edwardian Baroque features. It was rebuilt in 2007 and the line electrified in 2008. Locals call it the Taj Mahal of Ipoh.
It serves KTM ETS express services, KTM Komuter trains as the southern end of the Butterworth to Ipoh line, and freight. The Majestic Hotel occupies part of the building.

Why it matters
Why Ipoh Railway Station is worth your time
Ipoh grew on tin, and the railway tied the mines to the coast. The Kinta Valley line reached the town in the 1890s, and this building is a statement of confidence from the decades when Perak tin paid for civic architecture. It shows how a mining town that began as a village chose to present itself, in pale stucco with Indian and Islamic motifs, to every passenger who stepped off a train.
Today it matters for a second reason. The ETS service has made Ipoh an easy trip from Kuala Lumpur, and the station is where visitors first meet the city. For heritage-minded travellers, it also sets up the story you will follow through the Old Town: tin wealth, colonial design, and the later decline and revival of the streets around it.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Treat the station as the first stop of an Old Town morning rather than a destination in itself. Stand across the road to take in the full composition: a long white facade with domes, arches and a clock tower, the kind of Moorish Revival design that British colonial architects used for railway termini across Malaya. Then walk the arcades and look at the plasterwork and the columns up close, because the detail is better than the distant view suggests.
If you are arriving by ETS from Kuala Lumpur, you will already have walked through it, so spend a few minutes inside looking at the platform canopies and the waiting halls before you leave. The upper part of the same building houses the Majestic Hotel, which is worth knowing about if you want a heritage stay with a short walk to the Old Town sights.
The Town Hall stands directly opposite and the Birch Memorial Clock Tower is a short walk away, so the three form a natural trio. Do them in the cooler hours and keep the afternoon for something indoors.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
- Confirm current ETS and Komuter timetables on the operator's site
- Photograph from the opposite pavement for the full facade
- Keep luggage handling in mind; use the station's own porters or a cab at the front
- Pair with the Town Hall and clock tower in one short walk
