Jaffna travel guide

The Tamil heart of Sri Lanka: temple towers, a colonial fort, island ferries and a food culture closer to Chennai than Colombo.

Jaffna is the main city of Sri Lanka's Northern Province and the cultural capital of the island's Tamil community. It sits on a flat peninsula of red soil and palmyra palms, and it feels closer to Tamil Nadu than to the Sinhala south. Tamil is the everyday language, temples set the rhythm of the day, and the food is spicy, coconut-rich and built around rice, seafood and vegetables.

For most of the war years the city was largely closed to visitors. The railway reopened to Jaffna only in October 2014, and tourism is still small and local. That shows in the facilities: guesthouses and a few hotels, simple restaurants, limited signage and few organised tours. It also means quiet streets and little hassle.

The sights cluster in two groups. In and around the city are Jaffna Fort, the Public Library, Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil and the ruins of the old Jaffna kingdom. Further out are the Keerimalai springs and temples on the north coast, the Casuarina Beach at Karainagar, and the island shrines and ponies of Nainativu and Delft, reached by ferry from Kurikadduwan.

For Indian families the draw is familiarity with a difference: Hindu temples with Tamil traditions in a Sri Lankan setting, and a direct short flight from Chennai. Plan for heat, long drives to the islands, and the need to check opening times locally. Read the notes on food and the rainy season before you book.

Food to try in Jaffna

Food and restaurants · 8 guides

Jaffna food is Tamil: rice, string hoppers, pittu, dosa, curries with coconut and tamarind, and a lot of seafood. Jaffna crab curry and the seafood soup known as kool are local specialities, and palmyra treacle with curd is a typical sweet. Meat and fish are common, so vegetarians should choose their restaurants rather than rely on menus.

We could verify three listings from a travel guide. Malayan Cafe and Akshathai (Nila) are described as vegetarian, and Mangos is described as an Indian restaurant for dosa and kotthu parotta. We could not confirm that either vegetarian restaurant is strictly Pure Veg, so neither carries a diet tag; ask about egg on arrival. We found no verified Jain kitchen, and no vegan restaurant. For Jain or no-onion meals, ask your hotel to arrange them in advance and carry snacks.

In practice, order dosa, idli, vada, vegetable thali and rice with dhal and vegetable curries, and ask whether dishes contain egg, fish stock or dried fish. Drink bottled or filtered water.

Shopping in Jaffna

Shopping

Shopping in Jaffna is local and low-key. The central market and the lanes around it sell spices, curry powders, dried goods, sarees and household items. Palmyra products such as woven baskets, mats and treacle are a regional speciality, and Jaffna mangoes are famous in season. Prices are generally fixed or lightly negotiated. Spices and palmyra crafts are easy to carry home. Check customs rules at your airport for food items.

Choose without overthinking

Which Jaffna experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Nainativu or Delft Island for an island day?

Nainativu is a short ferry hop with two temples and suits most ages. Delft is a long day on basic boats with ponies and ruins. Choose Nainativu for ease and Delft only if you are fit and want quiet.

City sights or the north coast first?

Do the city first: fort, library and Nallur are compact. Use a second day for Keerimalai, Maviddapuram and Kandarodai, which share one road.

Casuarina Beach or Point Pedro?

Casuarina Beach is closer and easier, with shade and calm water. Point Pedro is a longer drive to the northern tip. Pick the beach for a relaxed afternoon and Point Pedro if you like road trips.

Hotel or guesthouse?

Hotels offer comfort and better English and meal planning, which helps older travellers and Jain diners. Guesthouses are cheaper and closer to local life but vary in quality.

Jaffna with elderly parents: what to know

  • Plan sightseeing for early morning or late afternoon; midday heat on the open fort and temple floors is intense.
  • Choose either Nainativu or Delft for the islands; Delft is a long, basic day and Nainativu is much easier.
