Plan 01

1 day in Jaffna

  1. 01

Day 1: Fort, library and Nallur

Start at Jaffna Fort in the morning, then visit the Public Library and have a vegetarian lunch. After a rest, go to Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil in the late afternoon for the evening puja and add Mantri Manai if time allows.

Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil1 to 2 hoursEasyLate afternoon for the evening puja; July to August for the annual festival, with large crowds
Mantri Manai20 to 30 minutesEasyMorning light

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Jaffna Fort: The grounds are flat grass and stone with almost no shade at midday, and some ramparts have uneven steps. Older visitors can walk the lower paths and sit on the walls. Carry water, a hat and avoid the 11 am to 3 pm sun.

Pacing

Pacing a Jaffna trip for parents and children

  • Plan sightseeing for early morning or late afternoon; midday heat on the open fort and temple floors is intense.
  • Choose either Nainativu or Delft for the islands; Delft is a long, basic day and Nainativu is much easier.
  • Carry water, a hat and sunscreen, and drink only bottled or filtered water.
  • Keep a hospital plan: Jaffna Teaching Hospital is the main government hospital in the Northern Province. Carry travel insurance with medical cover.
  • Dress modestly for temples, with shoulders and knees covered, and expect to remove footwear.
  • Avoid unmarked land away from roads and paths, as some areas may still have war-era hazards.
