The story behind Nahargarh Fort
Sawai Ram Singh II carried out a substantial rebuilding of the fort in 1868, adding to Jai Singh II's original 1734 structure, before Sawai Madho Singh II built Madhavendra Bhawan as a summer palace in the 1880s. That two-stage history is why the fort mixes an earlier defensive layout with a later, more residential palace.
Madhavendra Bhawan's plan gave each of the Maharaja's queens an identical suite, connected to his own apartment by covered passages so he could visit without the queens crossing paths with one another, a detail that is unusual even among Rajasthan's zenana buildings.
