Why it matters
Why Ancol Dreamland is worth your time
Ancol is a modern leisure estate rather than a historic site, and the point of visiting is to give children a day out after museum mornings. Wikipedia calls it the largest integrated tourism area in Southeast Asia.
Its position on the North Jakarta waterfront also makes it a useful base for boats. Ancol is close to Kota Tua and Sunda Kelapa, so it can be combined with the old port in a north Jakarta day. Evening is the best time to sit on the pier and watch the city lights.

How to experience it
Ancol opened in 1966 and covers about 552 hectares. It is large, so pick one or two attractions. Dunia Fantasi, or Dufan, is the theme park, with over 40 rides and attractions, opened on 29 August 1985, facing the Java Sea. Sea World Ancol is an oceanarium that opened in 1996. Atlantis Water Adventure is a water park of over five hectares with a wave pool, lazy river and slides.
For a gentler day, walk the waterfront, sit at the pier or one of the two main beaches, Carnival Beach and Festival Beach. Pasar Seni, the art market and artist residency, has operated for over 25 years, and holds a jazz series on Friday nights, per Wikipedia.
As a break from the heritage circuit, Ancol suits grandchildren. For older visitors, choose Sea World or a seaside walk. Eat before you arrive, since vegetarian options inside are not verified.
