Area by area

Jakarta neighbourhoods compared

  1. 01

Menteng and the Merdeka Square area (Central Jakarta)

Best for: First-time visitors who want to reach Monas, the National Museum and Istiqlal quickly

Good to know: A central base with the major sights close. Traffic is still heavy, but short drives or walks replace long ones. Check lift access and hotel breakfast options for vegetarians.

  2. 02

    Thamrin and Sudirman (business district)

Best for: Travellers who want MRT access and larger hotels

Good to know: The MRT runs along this corridor between Bundaran HI and Lebak Bulus, which helps with getting around. It is less atmospheric, and the old town is a longer drive.

  3. 03

    Kota Tua and North Jakarta

Best for: History lovers and families heading to Ancol

Good to know: Closer to Fatahillah Square, Sunda Kelapa and Ancol, but further from the central business district. Check hotel quality carefully.

  4. 04

    Near the airport

    Best for: Short transit stays

Good to know: Convenient before an early flight, with little to see locally. Allow for traffic if you plan to go into the city.

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
