Plan 01

1 day in Jakarta

  1. 01

Day 1: Merdeka Square and the old town

Start early at the National Monument, take the lift to the platform if the queue is reasonable, and see the dioramas under the base. Cross to Istiqlal Mosque in the late morning and, if you wish, to the cathedral opposite. After lunch and a rest, drive to Kota Tua and spend the late afternoon on Fatahillah Square and in the Jakarta History Museum. Finish with an early dinner nearby.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
National Monument (Monas)1.5 to 3 hours including the lift queueModerateMorning on a weekday, before the heat and school groups; clearer air in the dry months (May to September)
Istiqlal Mosque45 to 90 minutesModerateMid-morning outside prayer times; avoid Friday midday
Jakarta History Museum (Fatahillah Square)1 to 1.5 hours inside; 3 to 4 hours for the square and neighbouring museumsModerateMorning on a weekday, before the heat and weekend crowds

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at National Monument (Monas): The square is flat but large, and the walk from the gate to the base is long and shadeless. A lift takes visitors to the 115 m platform, so there are no stairs to climb, but queues can be long and the lift is small. Sit down in the museum level if you need a break.

With parents at Istiqlal Mosque: Floors are cool marble and the interior is airy and shaded, which suits older visitors in the heat. Distances inside are long, there are stairs between some levels, and you will be barefoot or in socks, so allow for slippery floors. Take a break in the shaded outer arcades.

2 days in Jakarta

    Day 1: Merdeka Square cluster

Morning at the National Monument, then the National Museum, which suits an indoor midday. Late afternoon at Istiqlal Mosque and Jakarta Cathedral, outside prayer and Mass times. Evening at Pasar Baru for fabric and an Indian dinner.

Day 2: Kota Tua and Glodok

Start at Sunda Kelapa harbour while the light is soft, then move to Fatahillah Square for the Jakarta History Museum and Museum Bank Indonesia. After a rest, walk a short route through Glodok to Kim Tek Ie temple and eat at a vegetarian place you have planned in advance.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Sunda Kelapa Harbour1 to 1.5 hoursModerateEarly morning, when boats are loading and the light is soft
Jakarta History Museum (Fatahillah Square)1 to 1.5 hours inside; 3 to 4 hours for the square and neighbouring museumsModerateMorning on a weekday, before the heat and weekend crowds
Museum Bank Indonesia1 hourEasyWeekday morning, to avoid weekend crowds
Kim Tek Ie (Vihara Dharma Bhakti)30 to 45 minutesEasyMorning, outside festival days

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Sunda Kelapa Harbour: The quayside is flat but uneven, with no shade and little seating. Heat and dust are real issues for older visitors. Stay near the entrance and use a car with a driver, and keep the visit short.

With parents at Jakarta History Museum (Fatahillah Square): The square is flat and car-free, but exposed to the sun. Inside, floors are old and there are staircases between levels. Benches in the square and cafes around it give rest stops. Midday heat is the main difficulty.

    Day 3: A family day

Choose Taman Mini Indonesia Indah for pavilions, the bird park and the cable car, or Ancol for Sea World, the waterfront and the art market. Do not combine both. Eat at Status Vegetarian Restaurant, which is in North Jakarta, if you pick Ancol.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Taman Mini Indonesia Indah4 to 6 hoursModerateWeekday morning, to avoid weekend crowds
Status Vegetarian Restaurant1 hour for a mealEasyLunch or early dinner

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Taman Mini Indonesia Indah: The park is large, and since the 2022 revitalisation private cars are not allowed inside. Visitors use an electric shuttle, the cable car, or rented bicycles and carts, which helps older visitors. Shade and seating vary.

Guides for the stops on these routes

Pacing

Pacing a Jakarta trip for parents and children

  • Plan one cluster per day; Jakarta's sights are far apart and traffic can double a short journey.
  • Hire a car with a driver or use a ride-hailing app rather than public transport if mobility is limited.
  • Do outdoor sights in the morning; the city is hot and humid all year and midday heat is tiring.
  • Carry travel insurance and know the nearest major hospital to your hotel; ask your hotel to recommend one.
  • Expect uneven pavements, steps and few rest stops in Kota Tua and Glodok; use cafes on Fatahillah Square for breaks.
  • Wear modest clothing and easy-off shoes for mosques; cover shoulders and knees.
