The short answer

Kali Masjid, Jalna: what visitors should know first

Visit for the architecture, but remember it is an active mosque. Go outside prayer times, dress modestly, and ask permission before photographing. A short stop of 30 to 45 minutes is enough.

History and context

The story behind Kali Masjid, Jalna

Wikipedia dates the mosque to 1578, built under the Nizam Shahi dynasty of Ahmadnagar; some travel accounts give 1557 and credit the governor Jamshed Khan, so the exact date and patron are not settled. An adjacent hammam was added a few years later, and a sarai stands opposite.

The mosque has been renovated over time while keeping its historic character.

Why it matters

Why Kali Masjid, Jalna is worth your time

Kali Masjid is Jalna's most complete early monument and one of the clearest signs that the town was a significant place under the Ahmadnagar Sultanate. Its Deccan style, black stone and carved details show local craftsmanship rather than imported Mughal forms.

Because it is still in daily use, it also shows how historic buildings continue to serve their communities. Seeing it alongside the fort and the lake gives a fuller picture of Jalna than its industrial reputation suggests.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

The Kali Masjid, called the black mosque because of its dark stone, is a rewarding short stop on a walk through Old Jalna. Approach through the large stone gate with its white-painted jali screens, then step into the walled compound lined with an arcade on three sides.

Take time to look at the prayer hall. A single main dome, carved with lotus leaves, sits over the hall, with six smaller domes on octagonal columns. Four minarets, about 20 m tall, rise at the corners. Arabic inscriptions decorate the interior, and the entrance door carries the construction date in Persian. Nearby are the remains of a hammam and a sarai, which show the mosque was once part of a larger complex.

This is a working Friday mosque holding about 700 worshippers, so avoid prayer times, speak quietly, and ask before taking photographs.

Plan with confidence

Visit as a guest, not a spectator.

  • Dress modestly and remove footwear where asked
  • Avoid prayer times, especially Friday midday
  • Ask before taking photographs
  • Take a car to the gate; the lanes are narrow
