Jalore sits on the Jawai river about 140 km south of Jodhpur, in the dry southern plains of Marwar. It is known as the Granite City of India, and its main sight is the hill fort of Suvarnagiri, the Golden Mount, which rises above the town. The fort was held by the Paramaras and then the Jalore Chauhans, fell to Alauddin Khalji in 1311, and later passed to the Rathores of Marwar.
This is not a polished tourist town, and that is much of its appeal. The fort is a ruin to be climbed rather than a museum to be toured, with Jain temples, a Shiva temple and a mosque inside its walls. In the town below, Topekhana is a short stop for anyone interested in reused temple stone and layered history.
The district's best-known pilgrimage sites lie to the south. Bhinmal, about 72 km away, was an early Gurjara-Pratihara capital. Near it are Bhandavpur Jain Tirth, a Mahavira temple with inscriptions from the 8th century, and the hilltop shrine of Sundha Mata, which has a ropeway. Treat Jalore as a base for one day on the fort and town, and one or two longer days of temple trips.
For older travellers the main points are heat, the fort climb and distance. Winter is the sensible season, plans should be short and early, and a hired car makes the southern loop far easier than public transport.
