The short answer
Bhinmal (Srimal): what visitors should know first
Worth a half day if you like history more than monuments. Go for the stepwell and temples, expect a working market town, and combine it with Bhandavpur or Sundha Mata rather than making it a standalone trip.
History and context
The story behind Bhinmal (Srimal)
Jain accounts describe the founding of the Shrimali clan by Acharya Swayamprabhasuri, who is said to have converted King Jayasen and the town's households. Xuanzang visited between 631 and 645 CE, Brahmagupta wrote in 628 CE, and Nagabhata I is said to have founded a dynasty at Jalore around 730 CE. In 1147 the main Mahalakshmi image was moved to Patan.

Why it matters
Why Bhinmal (Srimal) is worth your time
Bhinmal matters because it was a major early centre in the region. It was an early capital of the Gurjara-Pratihara dynasty, and it was the birthplace of the Sanskrit poet Magha and the mathematician-astronomer Brahmagupta, whose treatise dates to 628 CE.
For a visitor to Jalore district, the town explains how a quiet corner of Rajasthan sat on major political, scholarly and trading routes. It is better enjoyed with some context than as a standalone sight, so read a little first or travel with a local guide.

How to experience it
Bhinmal, once called Srimala or Shrimal Nagar, is a working town today, but its history is long. Chinese pilgrim Xuanzang mentions it as Pi-lo-mo-lo in the 7th century. It is the origin of the Shrimali Brahmin name and a place the Jain tradition links to the founding of the Shrimali clan. Hold that history in mind as you walk around, because the buildings are modest.
The town's sights include Dadeli Baori, a stepwell; the Mahalakshmi Kamaleshvari temple; and the Shri Parshwa Nath Jain temple, where a 450-year-old structure was unearthed in 2002 and holds five white marble Tirthankara images. Kshemkari Mata temple is also on tourist lists. Visit them in the cool morning, ask for local directions rather than relying on signs, and keep to a half-day plan.
Bhinmal works best as the middle of a southern loop: Bhandavpur and Sundha Mata are each within reach, and the town offers meals and a rest stop between them.
