Jamkhed is a town and taluka headquarters in Ahilyanagar district, the district formerly called Ahmednagar, on the semi-arid Deccan plateau between Ahilyanagar and Beed. It does not appear on most tourist maps, and that is part of its appeal: a few uncrowded sights in a working farming landscape.

The best-known historical site is Kharda Fort, a square ground fort of the Nimbalkar family where the Nizam's army took refuge during the Battle of Kharda in March 1795. A short distance away, Chondi is the birthplace of Ahilyadevi Holkar, and the state is developing it as a national memorial. In the neighbouring taluka, Rehekuri Blackbuck Sanctuary protects a herd of Indian blackbuck on open grassland.

Jamkhed is also known for the Comprehensive Rural Health Project, founded in 1970 by Dr Raj and Dr Mabelle Arole, whose community health model has influenced health workers around the world.

Plan this as a quiet two-day loop from Ahilyanagar, Pune or Beed. Facilities are basic, distances are long, and the cooler months from October to February are by far the most comfortable.

Food to try in Jamkhed

Food and restaurants

Food in Jamkhed is simple Maharashtrian fare: jowar and bajra bhakri with zunka, pithla, thecha and dal, along with misal and poha for breakfast. Small family-run eateries along the highway serve thalis at modest prices. Choose busy places, eat hot food and carry bottled water, especially in summer.

There are no fine-dining options. Plan meals around your sightseeing, and carry snacks for the fort and the sanctuary, where there are almost no shops.

Shopping in Jamkhed

Shopping

There is little tourism shopping here. The weekly markets and everyday shops in Jamkhed sell farm produce, snacks and basic goods, and Kharda was once a weaving and trading town in the Peshwa period. Buy water and supplies in town before heading to the sights.

Choose without overthinking

Which Jamkhed experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Kharda Fort or Rehekuri?

Choose Kharda for Maratha history and an easy, level visit. Choose Rehekuri for open-country wildlife and early-morning light. Fit both into two days if you can.

Kharda alone or with Chondi?

Kharda is a short stop. Adding Chondi makes a fuller day and links the fort to Ahilyabai Holkar's story, since both are in Jamkhed taluka.

Day trip from Ahilyanagar or overnight in Jamkhed?

Ahilyanagar to Kharda and back is a long day on the road. An overnight in Jamkhed is kinder and lets you start at dawn.
