Before you go
Jamkhed with elderly parents: what to know
- Choose the cooler months; the plateau is exposed and hot from March to June.
- Hire a car and driver for the day, since public transport to Kharda and Rehekuri is limited.
- Kharda Fort is level, but carry water and a hat and ask about the caretaker before you set out.
- Avoid the Kanifnath stairs unless you are comfortable with 400 steps.
- Carry any medicines you need; pharmacies and hospitals are limited outside Jamkhed town.
Easiest first
Places in Jamkhed sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (4)
- Chondi, Birthplace of Ahilyabai Holkar (Places to visit · 45 minutes to 1 hour) — The village is level and mostly accessible by road, but facilities such as toilets and shade at the memorial may be basic while redevelopment continues.
- Comprehensive Rural Health Project (Jamkhed Model) (Culture and craft · Half a day if a visit is arranged) — The campus is a working hospital and training centre, with level walking in most places. Any visit is arranged in advance, so seating and access can be discussed beforehand.
- Kharda Fort (Places to visit · 1 to 1.5 hours) — The fort is on level ground and the rampart stairs are short, but the interior is uneven and ruined, with little shade or seating. The stepwell is deep and unfenced in places, so keep a safe distance.
- Rehekuri Blackbuck Sanctuary (Places to visit · 2 to 3 hours at the sanctuary, plus travel from Jamkhed) — The terrain is flat and open, and much can be seen from a vehicle. There is little shade, and facilities such as toilets and seating are limited, so avoid the midday sun.
Some walking — plan a break (2)
- Kanifnath Temple, Kharda (Places of worship · 1 to 1.5 hours) — The climb has over 400 stone steps with little published information on handrails or seating. Older visitors should climb only if comfortable with long stairs, and rest often.
- Siddhivinayak Temple, Siddhatek (Places of worship · 1 to 2 hours depending on queues) — The temple has queues on busy days and some walking and steps at the shrine; check the approach and seating before arrival and avoid festival days.

Practical tips for Jamkhed
- Heat. March to June is very hot on the plateau. Plan outdoor sights for early morning in the cooler months.
- Getting around. Hire a car with a driver. Public transport to Kharda and Rehekuri is limited and timings change.
- Access to Kharda. The fort gate is often locked. Ask in the village for the caretaker rather than assuming it is open.
- Wildlife etiquette. At Rehekuri, keep your distance from blackbuck, stay quiet and do not feed animals. Confirm timings and charges at the gate.
- Facilities. There are few toilets, shops or cafes at the sights. Carry water and snacks.
- Money. Carry cash for small purchases and entry charges; ATMs are scarce away from Jamkhed town.
- Dress. Wear sturdy shoes, a hat and light full-cover clothing. Dress modestly at temples.
- Health project. The Comprehensive Rural Health Project is not a tourist attraction. Contact it in advance and respect patient privacy.
