Area by area

Jammu neighbourhoods compared

  1. 01

    Gandhi Nagar

Best for: Families and seniors who want restaurants and services close by

Good to know: A residential and commercial area on the newer side of the city with hotels, restaurants and shops. It is about a short drive from the old city, so you trade atmosphere for easier parking and quieter nights. Check lift access and room position if you are travelling with elders.

  2. 02

Residency Road and the old-city edge

Best for: Travellers who want to walk to Raghunath Temple and the bazaars

Good to know: Convenient for temples and street food, but busier and noisier, with narrow lanes where cars cannot always reach the door. Ask about drop-off access and stairs before booking.

  3. 03

    Near Jammu Tawi station

Best for: Early trains and onward trips to Katra or Kashmir

Good to know: Practical for rail connections and the bus links, but the area is traffic-heavy and less scenic. Good if you arrive late or leave at dawn.

  4. 04

Palace Road and the Tawi bank

Best for: A calmer stay close to Amar Mahal

Good to know: Quieter and greener, with views over the river in places. Fewer restaurants are within walking distance, so you will use a car for most meals.

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
