Plan 01

1 day in Jammu

  1. 01

Day 1: Old city temples and a palace museum

Start at Raghunath Temple in the morning, when the complex is quietest, and walk through the lanes of Raghunath Bazaar for a first look at the old city. Have an early lunch and try kalari kulcha at a long-running stall if you are comfortable with street food. After a rest, visit the Dogra Art Museum in the Mubarak Mandi complex, then drive to Amar Mahal for the Dogra portraits and library rooms. End at Bahu Fort and Bagh-e-Bahu in the late afternoon for the view over the Tawi, or at Ranbireshwar Temple for the evening atmosphere.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Raghunath TempleAbout 1 hourEasyMorning on a weekday; Navratri and festival days are very crowded
Dogra Art MuseumAbout 1 hourEasyMorning in the cooler months; check seasonal opening hours
Bahu Fort and Bagh-e-BahuAbout 2 hours with the gardenModerateLate afternoon for the view; avoid Tuesdays, Sundays and Navratri if you want quiet
Ranbireshwar TempleAbout 45 minutesEasyEarly morning or evening; Mahashivratri is very crowded

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Bahu Fort and Bagh-e-Bahu: The road reaches close to the fort, but the shrine area has ramps and steps, and the garden below is a gentle slope. Benches and shade are available in the garden. Monkeys live on the grounds, so keep food hidden.

Plan 02

2 days in Jammu

  1. 01

Day 1: Raghunath, bazaars and museums

Begin with Raghunath Temple and the bazaar around it, then visit Panjbakhtar, the coin-floored Shiva shrine nearby. Break for lunch and a rest. In the afternoon, see the Dogra Art Museum for its Pahari miniatures and look at the outside of Mubarak Mandi, where much of the palace is closed to the public. Finish with a kulcha or sweets stop in the old city.

Dogra Art MuseumAbout 1 hourEasyMorning in the cooler months; check seasonal opening hours

Pace: All the stops today are easy on the legs.

  2. 02

Day 2: Temples and the river

Start at Ranbireshwar Temple on Shalimar Road for the crystal lingams, then go to Peer Kho cave temple on the Tawi bank if the steps suit you. After lunch, visit Amar Mahal for its portraits, library rooms and the view over the river. Spend the late afternoon at Bahu Fort and the garden below it, and watch the light fall on the city.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Ranbireshwar TempleAbout 45 minutesEasyEarly morning or evening; Mahashivratri is very crowded
Peer Kho Cave TempleAbout 30 to 45 minutesModerateMorning; Shivratri is very crowded

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Peer Kho Cave Temple: Reaching the lingam means going down steps and through a low passage where you must bend. Not suitable for anyone with knee, back or breathing difficulties. The courtyard above is easier.

Guides for the stops on these routes

Pacing

Pacing a Jammu trip for parents and children

  • Use a car with a driver for the whole day. Distances in Jammu are short, but traffic and heat make autos tiring between old-city stops.
  • Visit temples in the morning, rest after lunch and keep one gentle activity for the evening. Between May and September, the afternoons are very hot.
  • Peer Kho involves steps and a low, narrow passage inside the cave. Ask a family member to check it first, or skip the interior if bending is difficult.
  • Amar Mahal and the Dogra Art Museum are the easiest sights for a slow pace, with covered rooms and benches in places. Check current opening days, as museums often close one day a week.
  • Expect large crowds at temples on festival days, Navratri and weekends. Visit on a weekday morning if you prefer space and quiet.
  • Carry water, a hat and any regular medicines, and keep a light layer for cool winter mornings and evenings.
