Jamshedpur is India's first major planned industrial city. It grew from a village called Sakchi, chosen in 1904 for a steel plant because iron ore, water and sand were all close by, and the first steel was rolled in 1912. In 1919 the town was named after Jamsetji Tata, the industrialist whose idea it was, and it is still shaped by Tata Steel in its parks, lakes, roads and sports grounds. It lies between the Subarnarekha and Kharkai rivers.
Do not come expecting forts or old bazaars. The pleasures are quieter: Jubilee Park and its lake, a well-kept zoo, the Dimna reservoir under the Dalma range, a small collection of temples, a mosque and markets that show how many communities came here to work. Sakchi is the oldest part of the city, Bistupur the older commercial heart, and the hills around are forested and home to wild elephants.
It is a practical destination for families and older travellers. Distances are short, roads are wide, parks are flat and the city is generally orderly. The real constraints are the weather and the lack of big attractions. Visit between November and February, plan one outing a day, rest in the afternoon and add a day trip to Ghatshila or the Dalma hills if you have time.
