Jowai is the headquarters of West Jaintia Hills district and the cultural centre of the Pnar people. It stands on a plateau at about 1,380 metres, with the Myntdu river curling around it on three sides, and lies roughly 64 km from Shillong along the highway towards Barak valley. Most travellers pass through on the way elsewhere. Those who stop find a working hill town with a short list of genuinely distinctive things to see.
The sights are modest in scale and varied in kind. Thadlaskein Lake sits right on the highway, wrapped in a folk tale about the way it was dug. Tyrshi Falls and Ialong Park are a short drive out. Further afield, the village of Nartiang holds Meghalaya's largest collection of standing stones and a Shakti temple that dates to the Jaintia kings. In town there is the Welsh-mission Presbyterian church, a memorial to the freedom fighter U Kiang Nangbah and, each July, the Behdienkhlam festival.
Jowai suits a slow trip: one or two nights, a car and driver, and a willingness to ask locals for stories. It is easy for older travellers on level sights but many places have uneven paths, and facilities are basic compared with Shillong. Tourism here is small, so expect fewer signboards and less polish, and check details locally.
It also works as a base for the district's waterfalls and for the road down to Dawki and Shnongpdeng, though you will want a driver who knows the roads in the rainy season.
