Plan 01

1 day in Jowai

  1. 01

Day 1: Lake, church and valley

Stop at Thadlaskein Lake on the highway as you arrive, then go into town to see the Presbyterian church and the Syntu Ksiar memorial to U Kiang Nangbah. Have a lunch of jadoh at a local eatery and rest. In the late afternoon, drive out to Ialong Park for the view over the Pynthorwah valley and the sunset. Check opening conditions with your driver beforehand.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Thadlaskein Lake30–60 minutesEasyClear mornings and late afternoons in the dry months, October to March
Ialong Park1–1.5 hoursEasyLate afternoon for sunset; October to March for clear air

Pace: All the stops today are easy on the legs.

Plan 02

2 days in Jowai

  1. 01

    Day 1: Town and lake

Begin at Thadlaskein Lake, then visit the church and Syntu Ksiar. After lunch, rest, then go to Ialong Park for sunset.

  2. 02

Day 2: Nartiang and a waterfall

Drive to Nartiang early to see the monolith garden and the Durga temple. Return for lunch and, if energy allows, visit Tyrshi Falls on a dry afternoon.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Tyrshi Falls1.5–2.5 hours including the walkModerateAfter the monsoon, from about September to November, for good flow with fewer slippery days

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Tyrshi Falls: The footpath leads down to the base of the falls and the return is uphill, so it is tiring for people with knee or breathing trouble. Rock near the water is slippery. A viewpoint from the upper path may be enough for some travellers.

Guides for the stops on these routes

Pacing

Pacing a Jowai trip for parents and children

  • Keep a car and driver for the whole day. Shared taxis are fine between towns but do not suit stops at sights.
  • Choose Thadlaskein Lake, the church, Syntu Ksiar and Ialong Park for easy outings; the falls need steps and care.
  • Carry warm layers from November to February: nights are cold at this altitude.
  • Avoid long drives in heavy monsoon, when slips can delay roads.
  • Facilities at sights are basic, so carry water, a hat, any medicines and tissues.
  • Ask your hotel to check road conditions before the Nartiang and Krang Suri trips.
