Why it matters
Why Bandipur Tiger Reserve is worth your time
Bandipur was established as a tiger reserve under Project Tiger in 1973 and now covers roughly 1,456 square kilometres in Chamarajanagar district. It is bordered by the Kabini river on the north and the Moyar river on the south, and together with Nagarhole forms a large protected forest block.
It matters for its conservation record and its place on the Mysuru to Ooty corridor. A night traffic ban on the highway through the forest was introduced to protect wildlife after an elephant was killed by a bus in 2018.

How to experience it
Bandipur is a separate park with its own gates and safari routes, reached by a different road from Kabini, roughly 80 km and around one and a half hours depending on the route. Treat it as a day trip or an overnight on the way to Ooty or Wayanad. Safari vehicles are operated by the forest department, with early-morning and late-afternoon slots, so check timings when you plan the day.
The forest is drier and more open than Kabini's riverside, with views across hills. Elephants, gaur, chital and birds are common, and tigers are present but rarely seen. Himavad Gopalaswamy Betta, the highest point in the reserve, has a temple on top, and access is controlled by the forest department; ask before planning to go up.
Because the journey is long, only add Bandipur if you have more than two nights. Otherwise a second Kabini drive or boat ride is likely a better use of time.
