Kabini is less a town than a stretch of shoreline. The Kabini river, which rises in Wayanad and joins the Kaveri downstream, was dammed near Beechanahalli in 1974, and the reservoir now separates Nagarhole National Park on the north bank from Bandipur Tiger Reserve to the south. Visitors know the Nagarhole side simply as Kabini. Most of what is here is a gate at Dammanakatte near Antharasante, a scatter of lodges, a boat jetty and the forest itself.
The draw is wildlife seen in an unusually open setting. As the water level drops in the dry months, grass sprouts on the exposed reservoir bed and elephants come down in large numbers to graze, which makes the boat ride at the end of the day one of the better-known wildlife experiences in the south. Tigers and leopards live in the park, and so do dholes, gaur and a long list of birds, but nobody can promise a sighting. A good trip here is judged on the whole of a day: the dawn drive, the long lunch, the river in late light.
The practicalities shape everything else. Private vehicles are not allowed inside the park, so you go out on forest-department canters, jeeps or lodge boats; safari slots are early morning and late afternoon, and most guests stay at lodges that bundle meals and drives. The journey from Mysuru takes about two hours, and from Bengaluru most of a day. For parents and older travellers the trip is quite manageable: seats are in vehicles and boats rather than on foot. What is hard is the heat in April, the bumpy forest tracks and the 5.30 am starts.
Treat Kabini as a two-night stay. One night leaves you with a single dawn and dusk; three nights is worthwhile only if you want to repeat the drives or add Bandipur. Mysuru and Wayanad have their own Raahzo pages and are best treated as day trips or onward stops from here.
