Before you go
Kabini with elderly parents: what to know
- Book a lodge with ground-floor rooms or a buggy: some properties spread cottages over wide grounds, and walks to dinner can be long in the dark.
- Request the front rows of the canter or the jeep's front seat; the tracks are bumpy, and a seat cushion and a light scarf help.
- Choose the afternoon boat over a second early drive if the 5.30 am wake-up is too much; the boat is smoother.
- Pack warm layers for the dawn drive even in summer; open vehicles feel cold at speed before sunrise.
- Carry regular medicines and a basic first-aid kit. The nearest large hospitals are in Mysuru, around two hours away.
- Keep expectations modest: sightings are never guaranteed, and elephants, deer and birds are the safe bet.
Easiest first
Places in Kabini sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (6)
- Bandipur Tiger Reserve (Places to visit · Full day with the transfer) — Safaris are in vehicles, so there is little walking. The road is long and winding, so allow breaks. Private vehicles are not allowed inside the park.
- Kabini Backwaters (Places to visit · 2 to 3 hours on a boat ride; longer if you watch from the shore) — Almost no walking. Boats have fixed seating and steps down to the jetty, which can be slippery; ask a crew member to steady you. Sun at midday is strong, so take a hat and water.
- Kabini Boat Safari (Places to visit · About 1.5 to 3 hours) — No walking beyond the jetty. Boats have seats and cover, but boarding involves steps and a gap over water, so ask crew for help. Sun reflects off the water, so wear a hat and sunglasses.
- Kabini Dam, Beechanahalli (Places to visit · 30 to 45 minutes) — Little walking is needed, though access points vary and surfaces can be uneven. Confirm whether the viewpoint is open to visitors before you go.
- Nagarhole (Kabini) Jungle Safari (Places to visit · About 2 to 3 hours per drive) — No walking, but the vehicle is open, hard-seated and bumpy. The canter holds a large group; a jeep has fewer seats. Dawn is cold, so bring a jacket and take a cushion for the seat.
- Srikanteshwara Temple, Nanjangud (Places of worship · 1 to 2 hours) — Level temple courtyards, but you walk barefoot on stone that can be hot at midday. Queues for darshan can be long, so ask about alternative lines and bring a hat for the walk.

Practical tips for Kabini
- Book early. Lodge rooms fill quickly from December to February and during school holidays. Book rooms, and if possible safari slots, well ahead, and check booking rules for the Dammanakatte gate with your lodge.
- Safari timing. Drives and boat rides run in the early morning and late afternoon. Expect a wake-up call before sunrise, and use the middle of the day for rest. Confirm current timings with your lodge or the forest department.
- No private vehicles in the park. You cannot drive your own car into the forest. Park rules also forbid plastic, loud noise, stepping out of vehicles and feeding animals. Follow your guide at all times.
- Heat and humidity. April is the hottest month in the nearest climate record, around 34 degrees by day, and May is humid. Wear light cotton, a hat and sunscreen, and drink plenty of water.
- What to wear. Choose muted greens, browns and greys, since bright colours are discouraged on safari. Take a jacket for dawn drives and a rain layer from June to November.
- Insects and rain. Carry repellent for dusk and a light raincoat in the wet months. Mosquito nets or screens are common at lodges, but ask when you book.
- Money and signal. Carry some cash, as card machines are not guaranteed in village shops and mobile signal can be patchy near the forest. Lodges usually accept cards and take bookings in advance.
- Photography. A lens of around 200 to 400 mm helps for birds and animals from the vehicle. Switch off flash, keep your voice low and use a beanbag or a scarf as a camera rest.
