Why it matters

Why Roghi Village is worth your time

Roghi lies on the old Hindustan-Tibet road corridor. A bungalow here is linked locally to Lord Dalhousie, the 19th-century Governor-General who admired the area and promoted the Hindustan-Tibet road, though accounts are mostly travel writing rather than documented history.

Today the village is part of Kinnaur's apple belt. Apples are the main cash crop in the Kalpa area, with chilgoza and apricots also grown nearby.

It also shows how Kalpa's economy works. Terraced orchards, timber houses and small shrines are the daily landscape for the people who live here, and seeing them from a lane rather than a window helps explain why visitors speak of Kinnaur as a lived-in place, not a showpiece. A short visit is enough, but it adds context that the viewpoints alone do not.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Roghi works best as a slow outing rather than a destination. Take a car along the cliff road from Kalpa and get out in the village to walk through orchards, past timber and slate houses and into the temple area. Sources mention a Laxminarayan temple and a Durga shrine, plus a bungalow once used by Lord Dalhousie that is now a private home. Look at it from the lane.

Timing matters. Blossom comes in spring, and sources suggest April to July as a good window; September is harvest, when orchards are busy and fruit is on sale. Winter brings snow and fewer services.

Take a flask and a snack, since options are limited. Combine Roghi with the cliff viewpoint nearby, then return to Kalpa by late afternoon so you are not on the narrow road in fading light.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Hire a car for the cliff road and agree a waiting time
  • Carry water and snacks
  • Respect privacy; do not enter homes or shrines uninvited
  • Return before dusk
