Kalpa is a village in Kinnaur, perched above the district town of Reckong Peo on a spur of the Sutlej valley. It sits at roughly 2,900 m on the old Hindustan-Tibet road, and across the valley rises the Kinner Kailash range, whose 6,050 m summit and rock pillar, the Shivling, are held sacred by both Hindus and Buddhists. Kalpa was once known as Chini, and it still has the feel of a working village: slate and timber houses, small temples and apple terraces.
The pleasures here are quiet ones. Watch the first light on the peaks, walk through the old village lanes, visit the gompa and wooden temples, and drive the cliff road to Roghi through orchards. Kothi, with its Chandika Devi temple, and Reckong Peo with its market and Buddhist gompa, are easy additions. Nothing here is a checklist sight, so two or three nights are better than a rushed day.
The journey is part of the cost. Kalpa is roughly 8 to 10 hours by road from Shimla on NH5, and monsoon landslides can slow the route. Winter is cold and snowy, and the HPTDC hotel closes from December to March. The best seasons are spring and autumn. For older travellers, the main issues are altitude, cold mornings and hilly lanes, but a facing room, a car and a slow pace make Kalpa manageable.
