Why it matters
Why Bheemeshwari Forest Walks is worth your time
Bheemeshwari lies in the forest of the Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary landscape, where elephants, deer, crocodiles, turtles and around 200 bird species have been recorded. River terns, fishing eagles, kingfishers and woodpeckers are common after the monsoon.
The river here was once famous for mahseer angling. Fishing is no longer allowed, and the camp's walks now focus on looking rather than taking, which suits families wanting a calm introduction to the forest.

How to experience it
Stay overnight at the Bheemeshwari Adventure and Nature Camp, run by Jungle Lodges on the bank of the Kaveri, about 100 km from Bengaluru via Kanakapura and Halagur. Packages include meals, an evening campfire, a guided nature walk and a coracle ride.
The nature walk is led by the camp's naturalists, usually in the early morning, and looks at native plants, birds, insects and animal tracks in the forest around the camp. A separate night trail inside the campus, also with a naturalist, looks for insects, spiders, frogs and night birds.
The camp also offers adventure activities such as zip-line, rope walks and kayaking at extra cost. Bring comfortable shoes, a hat and binoculars, and ask at the camp about walk timings when you check in.
