Why it matters
Why Chunchi Falls is worth your time
Chunchi Falls shows the quieter side of the Kanakapura river country. It is not a famous waterfall, and that is part of its appeal: you reach it through ordinary villages, walk in on your own feet, and meet only a handful of other visitors on a weekday.
It also shows what the Arkavathi river looks like before it joins the Cauvery at Sangama, which helps make sense of the larger confluence landscape. For a family that wants a short walk and a splash of green without a long trek, it fits well into the Mekedatu day.
Highlights
What not to miss
- 01
The falls in flow
After rain the Arkavathi drops over a rocky step in a loud, misty series of falls.
- 02
The short approach walk
A rough path through scrub leads to the viewpoint, giving the visit a bit of effort and quiet.
- 03
Combine with Sangama
The turn-off is on the Sangama road, so the falls fit neatly into one river day.

How to experience it
The turn to Chunchi Falls is signposted on the road from Kanakapura towards Sangama, near a village called Yeleguri. From where the road ends, you walk a short, uneven path through scrub to a viewpoint over the falls. The Arkavathi tumbles over a rocky step in a series of drops, and the sound and spray are most noticeable in the monsoon and soon after.
In dry months the flow thins to a trickle and the site is much less impressive, so check recent photos or ask locally before making a special trip. The rocks are slippery whenever they are wet, and the pools can be deeper than they look. Swimming is discouraged, and visitors are usually told to stay out of the water unless a local guide accompanies them.
There are no restaurants, shops or reliable toilets, so bring water and food. Most people combine the falls with Sangama and Mekedatu on the same outing, leaving the falls for the cooler end of the day.

- Wear shoes with good grip; rocks are slippery
