Plan 01

1 day in Kanakapura

  1. 01

Day 1: Sangama, Mekedatu and the falls

Leave Bengaluru early and reach Kanakapura for a tea stop. Drive south to Sangama, where the Arkavathi meets the Cauvery, and spend an hour by the water. Continue to Mekedatu and view the narrow gorge from the safe paths, without swimming. On the way back, stop at Chunchi Falls if the flow is good, and have a late lunch in Kanakapura before returning.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Chunchi Falls1 to 2 hoursModerateMonsoon and the months just after (roughly June to December), when the Arkavathi is flowing; weak in summer

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Chunchi Falls: The final approach is a rough, uneven walk with no handrails and sloping rock near the water. There are no benches or toilets on site. Older visitors may prefer to view from the upper rocks only.

Plan 02

2 days in Kanakapura

  1. 01

Day 1: Hill fort and town

Start at sunrise for Kabbaldurga if you are fit, or just visit its base. Return for lunch in Kanakapura and spend the afternoon at a quiet pace, perhaps seeing the cocoon and silk market activity in town.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Kabbaldurga3 to 4 hours including the climbDemandingSunrise and the cooler months, October to February; avoid the wet monsoon rocks

Pace: Kabbaldurga involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.

With parents at Kabbaldurga: The climb is steep bare granite with some carved footholds and no handrails. There is little shade. It is not suitable for people with mobility, balance or heart concerns, but the base can be enjoyed without climbing.

  2. 02

    Day 2: River country

Drive to Sangama and Mekedatu in the morning, then Chunchi Falls on the way back. Check road conditions first in the monsoon.

Guides for the stops on these routes

Pacing

Pacing a Kanakapura trip for parents and children

  • Do the river and falls in the cool months (November to February) and start early.
  • Skip the gorge scramble and the hill treks if balance or knees are a concern; enjoy the confluence and the drive instead.
  • Carry water, snacks, a hat and any medicines: there are few facilities at the river sites.
  • Use a hired car and a driver who knows the rural roads; do not rely on buses to reach Mekedatu.
  • Keep clear of the water's edge and never swim, especially in the monsoon.
  • Do not walk in the forest after dusk; elephants use the area.
