Why it matters

Why Death Railway train to Nam Tok is worth your time

The railway you ride on was built in 1942-43 as part of the Thailand-Burma Railway. Only the first 130 km or so in Thailand remain open, and the section to Nam Tok is the part that tourists use. Riding it is the most direct way to feel the geography the labourers worked in: the river, the cliff and the heat.

The station at Nam Tok opened in 1958 as part of the post-war reopening of the line. Today it is the terminus of regular services, and the experience of the journey is as much the point as the destination.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

The surviving section of the railway runs from Kanchanaburi to Nam Tok, about 77 km, on ordinary and local trains, with a weekend excursion from Bangkok. The trip crosses the Bridge on the River Kwai and then follows the river, with open windows, jungle and, in places, a wooden trestle that clings to the cliff above the water. Sit on the river side if you can and keep arms inside near the trestle.

Plan the day around the timetable. Many visitors take the train one way and return by car or songthaew, so they are not stuck waiting. Nam Tok station is near the Sai Yok Noi Waterfall, which makes a natural end. The weekend excursion is often crowded, so book or check availability in advance.

Do not expect comfort: carriages are basic, the pace is slow and delays occur. Treat the ride as a way to see the line, not a fast transfer. Take water and snacks.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Check the timetable the day before
  • Sit on the river side and keep arms inside
  • Take water and snacks; there is little onboard
  • Arrange a car for the return
