Area by area

Kanchanaburi neighbourhoods compared

  1. 01

    Riverside, Maenamkwai Road area

Best for: First-time visitors who want restaurants and the river within a short walk

Good to know: The main guesthouse and cafe strip, close to the war cemetery and railway museum. Many places are simple, so check air conditioning, stairs and the room's distance from the road before booking.

  2. 02

South bank near the bridge (Tha Ma Kham)

Best for: Families and seniors wanting a resort with a pool and quieter surroundings

Good to know: Several larger resorts sit on the river here, for example Felix River Kwai Resort, which lists 255 rooms in 20 low-rise pavilions with two pools and a shuttle bus. Expect to depend on the hotel shuttle or a taxi for the town.

  3. 03

    Near Erawan or Sai Yok

Best for: Travellers who want an early start at the waterfalls or a night on the river

Good to know: Rooms, raft houses and resorts are scattered along the river and the highways. They are quiet but far from hospitals and restaurants, so they suit confident, mobile travellers more than people with health concerns.

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
