Plan 01
1 day in Kanchanaburi
- 01
Day 1: Bridge, museum and cemetery
Start at the Thailand-Burma Railway Centre when it opens, which gives the clearest overview of why the railway was built and what it cost. Walk to Kanchanaburi War Cemetery next door. After a midday meal and rest, ride out to the Bridge on the River Kwai in the late afternoon, walk a short way along the bridge when the trains are not due, and watch the light on the river. If you still have energy, add the JEATH War Museum earlier in the day instead of the bridge walk.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Thailand-Burma Railway Centre 1.5 to 2.5 hours Easy Morning, as it opens; any season (indoors) Kanchanaburi War Cemetery 45 minutes to 1 hour Easy Early morning or late afternoon Bridge on the River Kwai 1 to 2 hours Easy Late afternoon, outside train times; November to February JEATH War Museum 1 hour Easy Morning; any season Pace: All the stops today are easy on the legs.

Day 2: Erawan or the train
Leave early for Erawan National Park, about 50 km north-west, and walk only as many tiers as is comfortable; swim in the lower pools if you wish. Alternatively, spend the day on the Death Railway train towards Nam Tok and stop at Sai Yok Noi Waterfall. Return to town for an easy evening along the river.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Erawan National Park Half a day Moderate November to February; weekday mornings Sai Yok Noi Waterfall 1 hour Easy Rainy season for volume; November to January for comfort Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.
With parents at Erawan National Park: The lower tiers have paved paths and are manageable for many older visitors. The route to the top tier is about 1.5 km up uneven stone, roots and steps, and the rocks are slippery when wet.

Day 2: Hellfire Pass and Sai Yok
Drive towards Sai Yok district. Visit Hellfire Pass Memorial Museum early and walk the cutting using the audio guide, then continue to Sai Yok Noi Waterfall and, if time allows, Sai Yok National Park. Consider a short stretch of the Death Railway train on the way back if timetables fit.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Hellfire Pass Memorial Museum 2 to 3 hours Moderate Morning, November to February Sai Yok Noi Waterfall 1 hour Easy Rainy season for volume; November to January for comfort Sai Yok National Park Half to full day Moderate November to February Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Sai Yok National Park: The park has paved paths near the headquarters but uneven ground in the caves. The journey is long, so it is a day for confident travellers.

Pacing
Pacing a Kanchanaburi trip for parents and children
- Keep to one major outing a day. The town sights are flat, but the heat from March to May is tiring and the road trips to Erawan or Hellfire Pass take a good part of a day.
- At Erawan the climb is up to about 1.5 km on uneven stone and tree roots. You can enjoy the lower tiers and turn back; there is no need to reach the top.
- Hellfire Pass has a steep walk down to the cutting. The museum and its audio guide at the top are accessible; ask staff about the easiest route.
- Choose a hotel with a lift or a ground-floor room, and a car pickup from the door. Many riverside guesthouses have stairs and no lift.
- Carry your regular medicines, a copy of the prescriptions and travel insurance papers. The town has medical facilities, but serious problems may need transfer to Bangkok.
- Drink bottled or boiled water, carry sun protection and shoes with good grip; stone near waterfalls is slippery in the wet.
