Why it matters
Why Sai Yok National Park is worth your time
Sai Yok National Park was declared on 27 October 1980 as Thailand's 19th national park. It lies about 100 km north-west of Kanchanaburi town, near the town of Nam Tok Sai Yok Noi.
Its value for visitors is variety: waterfalls, caves, river and forest in one place, away from the crowds of the main sights. It rewards those who want more than the bridge and the museums. Within the park, the Khwae Noi river is the thread that ties the visit together, and the quiet of the riverbank is a useful counterweight to a trip spent mostly on war memorials.

How to experience it
This is a longer outing than Sai Yok Noi. The park headquarters, about 40 km from the Sai Yok Noi falls, has Sai Yok Yai, a 10-metre cascade that drops directly into the Khwae Noi River. The park also has Tham Lawa, its largest cave, about 500 metres long with five large caverns of stalactites and stalagmites.
Plan a full day, with an early start and a driver. Combine it with Hellfire Pass on the way. The park is quiet compared with Erawan, and the setting by the river is pleasant for a picnic. Check the cave's current opening and guide arrangements, and wear shoes with grip.
For seniors, the riverside near the headquarters is the easiest part. Skip the caves if the path is steep.
