History and context
The story behind Ramnagar Gond Monuments
Ramnagar was established as the capital of the Gond kings of Garha-Mandla by Hriday Shah in 1657 after the court shifted from Chauragarh. The Moti Mahal's inscription of 1667 records the genealogy of the dynasty.
The wider region has an older history of Gond rule, including the 1564 defence of Garha-Mandla by Queen Durgavati against the Mughal viceroy Asaf Khan, which is recorded in accounts of Mandla.

Why it matters
Why Ramnagar Gond Monuments is worth your time
The Gond kingdom of Garha-Mandla was a major power of central India, and Ramnagar shows how a forest-dwelling dynasty built palaces that combined Rajput and Mughal influences. It is a reminder that Kanha's region has a long human history beyond wildlife.
Seeing it also puts the Baiga and Gond people of Kanha in context: they are part of a long regional tradition, not just a presence on the edge of a tiger reserve. It makes a worthwhile contrast to a trip otherwise spent in the forest.

How to experience it
Ramnagar sits on the southern bank of the Narmada in Mandla district, and was made the Gond capital by King Hriday Shah in 1657, after the court moved from Chauragarh. The main monument is the Moti Mahal, a palace with a quadrangle and central courtyard, where a stone inscription of 1667 records the genealogy of the Gond rulers of Garha-Mandla.
Nearby are the Raibhagat ki Kothi, also known as the Mantri Mahal, built for the king's minister; the Vishnu Mandir, built by Rani Sundari; the Begum Mahal; and the Dalbadal, a large rectangular building for soldiers. Several are ASI-protected, and the ensemble is on India's UNESCO tentative list.
Plan to see it on the drive between Kanha and Jabalpur and go in the morning. Some of the buildings are ruined and the Moti Mahal has narrow stairs, so wear sturdy shoes and be prepared to see only part of it.
