The short answer

Lakh Bahosi Bird Sanctuary: what visitors should know first

Go between December and February if you are a keen birder and can manage a long, rough drive. Carry food, water and binoculars, confirm access with the Kannauj forest office, and do not expect much beyond the lakes, a walkway and a few viewing structures.

History and context

The story behind Lakh Bahosi Bird Sanctuary

The sanctuary was created in 1988 to protect the wetland and its birds, although the district website gives 1989. It covers about 80 sq km according to the eco-tourism board and Wikipedia, though another figure of about 3 sq km around Bahosi lake appears in some accounts. The Bombay Natural History Society lists it as an Important Bird Area.

Why it matters

Why Lakh Bahosi Bird Sanctuary is worth your time

Lakh Bahosi is one of the larger wetland sanctuaries in Uttar Pradesh, and the Bombay Natural History Society lists it as an Important Bird Area. Estimates vary, but sources describe about 50,000 or more waterfowl in a winter season, a scale that is rare in the central Gangetic plain.

For a visitor to Kannauj, it adds a natural counterpart to the heritage and craft of the town: a wide, flat horizon of water and reeds instead of lanes and workshops. It rewards people who enjoy quiet time and are willing to accept the lack of facilities.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    Winter waterfowl

Migratory birds arrive from about November and stay until March, with around 50,000 waterfowl cited each year.

  2. 02

    The Bahosi walkway

A walkway of about 10 km runs around Bahosi lake, with gazebos and a watch tower for viewing.

  3. 03

    Heronries

Nesting colonies on the babul trees are worth a look in the right season.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Leave Kannauj early and drive via Tirwa and Indergarh; the last stretch from Indergarh to Bahosi is a single-lane road that needs repair, so allow extra time. The eco-tourism board describes the sanctuary as about 80 sq km, spread over two jheels about 4 km apart and including a stretch of the Upper Ganges Canal.

Once there, look for the interpretation centre, the observation gazebos and the watch tower, and the walkway around Bahosi lake, which travel press describes as about 10 km. Babul trees hold heronries. Open-billed storks, ibis, sarus cranes and herons are resident through the year, and winter brings migrants such as pelicans, bar-headed and greylag geese, pintails and red-crested pochards. Mammals include jackal, nilgai, mongoose and fishing cat.

Bring binoculars, water and all your food, because there is no food nearby. The forest rest house is reported to be unreliable and often closed, so do not plan to stay there without a confirmed booking. Move quietly and keep to marked areas.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Confirm entry rules with the Kannauj forest office
  • Start at dawn and allow for the slow road
  • Carry water, a packed lunch and binoculars
  • Wear warm layers in winter
  • Do not rely on the forest rest house
