Kannauj, ancient Kanyakubja, sits on the Ganga in central Uttar Pradesh and has been a capital more than once. Under the Maukhari dynasty and Emperor Harsha in the seventh century it was one of the great cities of northern India, and for the next few centuries Gurjara-Pratiharas, Palas and Rashtrakutas fought over it. The Gahadavala king Jaichandra ruled from here until Muhammad Ghori killed him in 1193 and the city began its long decline. Sher Shah Suri defeated Humayun near Kannauj in 1540.
Today it is a compact district town with a quiet, lived-in feel and very little in the way of polished tourist infrastructure. What it does have is a living craft. Kannauj is known as India's perfume capital, and its traditional attar, made by slow copper-pot distillation, carries a Geographical Indication tag granted in 2014. Visiting a working distillery and smelling the oils is the most distinctive thing to do here.
Beyond the attar lanes, the sights are modest: the Raja Jaichand mounds, the Mehndi Ghat on the Ganga, the Annapurna temple at Tirwa and a small archaeological museum with sculpture and terracotta. About 38 km away is Lakh Bahosi Bird Sanctuary, a large wetland that holds tens of thousands of waterbirds in winter. Kannauj suits unhurried travellers who like craft, history and birds more than monuments, but it needs realistic expectations: facilities are basic, and many details, such as timings, are not published.
