Plan 01

1 day in Kannauj

  1. 01

Day 1: Attar and old Kannauj

Start at a working attar distillery in the morning when the stills are firing, and ask to smell the oils and bottles. Walk or ride to Mehndi Ghat on the Ganga. After lunch, visit the Raja Jaichand mounds and the archaeological museum, and finish with a short visit to a temple such as the Annapurna temple in Tirwa if time allows.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Mehndi Ghat30–45 minutesModerateEarly morning or late afternoon
Raja Jaichand Mounds30–45 minutesEasyMorning or late afternoon, November to February

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Mehndi Ghat: Steps down to the water can be uneven or slippery, and shade and seating are limited. Viewing from the top of the ghat is enough if you prefer not to descend.

Plan 02

2 days in Kannauj

  1. 01

Day 1: Attar and the old city

Spend the morning at an attar distillery and the afternoon at the Raja Jaichand mounds and the archaeological museum, finishing with Mehndi Ghat at dusk.

  2. 02

Day 2: Tirwa and Lakh Bahosi

Leave early for Tirwa and its Annapurna temple, then continue to Lakh Bahosi Bird Sanctuary for a morning on the lake. Pack food and water, and return by mid-afternoon.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Lakh Bahosi Bird Sanctuary: The viewing can be done in short stages, but the access road is single lane and rough in places, there is almost no food nearby and shade and seating are scarce. Winter mornings are cold; bring layers and a packed lunch.

Plan 03

3 days in Kannauj

  1. 01

    Day 1: Attar lanes

Visit two distilleries to compare methods and oils, with time for conversation. Rest in the afternoon.

  2. 02

Day 2: History and the river

See the Raja Jaichand mounds, the archaeological museum and Mehndi Ghat in unhurried stages.

    Day 3: The sanctuary

Spend the day at Lakh Bahosi Bird Sanctuary with a stop at the Annapurna temple in Tirwa, ideally between December and February.

Guides for the stops on these routes

Pacing

Pacing a Kannauj trip for parents and children

  • Visit distilleries in the morning; they are hot, smoky and noisy, so keep the visit short.
  • Wear closed shoes. Lanes are narrow and uneven, and distillery floors can be wet or oily.
  • Carry water and food if you go to Lakh Bahosi; there is no food nearby and the access road is single lane.
  • Avoid April to June, when the heat is severe; winter mornings can be cold and foggy.
  • Arrange a car for Tirwa and the sanctuary; local transport is limited.
  • Confirm temple, museum and sanctuary timings locally, as they are not reliably published.
