Before you go
Kannauj with elderly parents: what to know
- Visit distilleries in the morning; they are hot, smoky and noisy, so keep the visit short.
- Wear closed shoes. Lanes are narrow and uneven, and distillery floors can be wet or oily.
- Carry water and food if you go to Lakh Bahosi; there is no food nearby and the access road is single lane.
- Avoid April to June, when the heat is severe; winter mornings can be cold and foggy.
- Arrange a car for Tirwa and the sanctuary; local transport is limited.
- Confirm temple, museum and sanctuary timings locally, as they are not reliably published.
Easiest first
Places in Kannauj sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (4)
- Annapurna Temple, Tirwa (Places of worship · 30–45 minutes) — The temple is a short walk from the road with limited seating. Queues build up on festival days, so go in the morning on a normal weekday.
- Kannauj Archaeological Museum (Places to visit · 45–60 minutes) — Indoor and level, with a short walk between galleries, which makes it a good cooler break from the heat. Seating is limited.
- Kannauj Attar Distilleries (Culture and craft · 1–2 hours) — Walking is short, but workshops are hot, smoky and sometimes wet underfoot, with narrow lanes and few seats. Visit in the morning and ask for a chair.
- Raja Jaichand Mounds (Places to visit · 30–45 minutes) — The ground is uneven and there is limited shade or seating, but the visit is short and requires little climbing. Wear sturdy shoes.
Some walking — plan a break (2)
- Lakh Bahosi Bird Sanctuary (Places to visit · Half to full day, plus about an hour each way) — The viewing can be done in short stages, but the access road is single lane and rough in places, there is almost no food nearby and shade and seating are scarce. Winter mornings are cold; bring layers and a packed lunch.
- Mehndi Ghat (Places to visit · 30–45 minutes) — Steps down to the water can be uneven or slippery, and shade and seating are limited. Viewing from the top of the ghat is enough if you prefer not to descend.

Practical tips for Kannauj
- Heat and cold. April to June is very hot, while winter mornings can be cold and foggy. Plan outdoor visits for the cooler hours.
- Getting around. Use autos or e-rickshaws in town. For Tirwa and Lakh Bahosi, hire a car; public transport to the sanctuary is thin.
- Attar etiquette. Ask before photographing workers and stills, and spend time smelling a few oils before buying. Be wary of very cheap pure-attar claims.
- Walking. The sights are close together, but lanes are narrow and uneven. Closed shoes help, especially around the stills.
- Food and water. Eat freshly cooked food and carry bottled water. Take a packed lunch to the sanctuary, where nothing is sold nearby.
- Money. Carry cash for small shops, rickshaws and donations, as card acceptance is uneven in smaller places.
- Dress. Dress modestly at temples and the ghat, and remove shoes where required.
- Timings. Museum, temple and sanctuary hours are not reliably published. Ask your hotel or the forest office before you travel.
