Why it matters
Why Kanpur Zoological Park is worth your time
Kanpur Zoological Park is one of the city's larger green spaces and a rare day out for families. It was built from 1971 with funding from the Uttar Pradesh Forest Department, opened on 4 February 1974 and completed around 1975. R.S. Bhadauria, an Indian Forest Service officer, was its first director.
For a visitor with children, it is a way to spend a half day outside the crowded centre. For others, it is a pleasant walk in a city that otherwise offers few.

How to experience it
Go in the morning, when animals are more active and the heat is lower. The zoo covers about 110 hectares in Nawabganj, and holds around 1,400 animals of about 125 species, including white tigers, leopards, hyenas, bears, rhinoceroses, hippopotamuses and chimpanzees, plus an aviary. Start at the far end and work back.
Use the toy train to cover the long distances and give older relatives a rest. Take water, a hat and a snack, since plastic bags are not allowed inside. The aquarium and the lake views are quiet stops between the larger enclosures.
A full visit takes most of a morning. If you are short of time, choose a few enclosures and leave the rest. Check which day the zoo is closed, which was reported to be Monday.
