Kanpur is not a postcard city and does not pretend to be. It sits on the right bank of the Ganga in central-western Uttar Pradesh, about 80 km south-west of Lucknow, and for most of the last two centuries it has been known for work: a British garrison town, a leather and saddlery centre, a textile town once nicknamed the Manchester of the East. It became an important British garrison town after the 1801 treaty.
What it offers a traveller is a short list of things that are real. The Kanpur Memorial Church and Nana Rao Park mark the 1857 siege of Cawnpore, one of the most painful episodes of that year, and the ghat where the killings began is still used by local people. The JK Temple is a large modern Radha-Krishna complex on a wooded campus. Moti Jheel and Phool Bagh are the city's open spaces, and Green Park Stadium has hosted Test cricket since 1952.
Outside the city, the Gupta-period brick temple at Bhitargaon, about 35 km south, is the best reason to hire a car for half a day, and Bithoor, a short drive north on the Ganga, is a separate pilgrimage and 1857 stop with its own guide on Raahzo.
Kanpur works best as a one- or two-day stop between Lucknow, Prayagraj and Agra, or as a base for those two outliers. It is dusty and loud, summers are severe, and the sights are spread out, but the underground metro section opened in 2025 now links Naveen Market, Bada Chauraha and Moti Jheel to Kanpur Central, which makes a car-free day in the middle of the city practical.
