Plan 01

1 day in Kanpur

  1. 01

Day 1: 1857 sites, a temple and the centre

Start at the Kanpur Memorial Church and its memorial garden while it is cool, then walk or drive to Nana Rao Park, built on the site of the old Memorial Well. Take the metro or a cab to Phool Bagh and the Kanpur Sangrahalaya, then break for lunch. In the afternoon, go to the JK Temple and its wooded campus, leaving bags in the cloakroom and keeping the camera away. Finish at Naveen Market for leather goods, or at Moti Jheel for an evening walk if the weather is kind.

Naveen Market1–2 hoursModerateLate morning or evening; October to March
Moti Jheel45–60 minutesEasyLate afternoon or evening; November to February

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Naveen Market: The market is crowded and traffic is heavy around it, with uneven pavements. Seating is limited. Older visitors should go at a quiet hour and use the nearby metro station, then take a cab back.

Plan 02

2 days in Kanpur

  1. 01

Day 1: 1857 and the city centre

Begin at the Kanpur Memorial Church, then Nana Rao Park, and go to Massacre Ghat on the river with a driver and a local guide if you want context for the siege. After lunch, see Phool Bagh and the museum, then Naveen Market and an early dinner near the centre.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time

Massacre Ghat (Sati Chaura Ghat)30–45 minutesModerateMorning; October to March

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Massacre Ghat (Sati Chaura Ghat): Steps lead down to the river and the ground is uneven. We could not verify seating or rails. Older visitors may prefer to view the ghat from the top of the steps and not go down.

With parents at Naveen Market: The market is crowded and traffic is heavy around it, with uneven pavements. Seating is limited. Older visitors should go at a quiet hour and use the nearby metro station, then take a cab back.

Day 2: Temple, lake and the zoo

Spend the morning at the JK Temple, then Moti Jheel for a gentle lakeside hour. After lunch and a rest, visit Kanpur Zoological Park if you have children with you, or ride the Orange Line metro end to end for a look at the city. If a Test or domestic match is on, Green Park Stadium is the evening's plan.

Green Park StadiumHalf a day for a match; not otherwise a sightModerateDuring a fixture; October to March suits the weather

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Kanpur Zoological Park: The zoo is large, with long walks between enclosures and little shade in summer. Older visitors should use the toy train, take rests and avoid the afternoon in warm months. We could not verify wheelchair access.

With parents at Green Park Stadium: Match days mean crowds, security checks and long walks from the road. Older travellers should arrange a seat in a stand with a roof if possible, and book a car to the gate. We could not verify access features.

Plan 03

3 days in Kanpur

  1. 01

Day 1: Church, park and museum

Do the Kanpur Memorial Church and Nana Rao Park in the morning, then Phool Bagh and the Kanpur Sangrahalaya after lunch. Keep the evening open.

Pace: All the stops today are easy on the legs.

  2. 02

    Day 2: Bhitargaon by car

Hire a car for the morning and go south to the Gupta-period Bhitargaon temple, about 35 km from the city. Ask your driver about the Jagannath temple at Behta Bujurg, a few kilometres further, and be back for a late lunch and a rest.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Bhitargaon TempleHalf a day including the driveModerateMorning; October to March

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Bhitargaon Temple: Roads to the village can be slow and the site has little in the way of shade or seating that we could verify. The temple is best seen from ground level, so older visitors do not need to climb. Plan a car and carry water.

  3. 03

Day 3: Temple, lake and market

Visit the JK Temple early, then Moti Jheel and Massacre Ghat. Spend the late afternoon at Naveen Market, and use the metro for your last evening if you are staying near it.

Pacing

Pacing a Kanpur trip for parents and children

  • Do outdoor sights before 11 am from March to June and take a long rest in the afternoon; May highs average above 40 C.
  • Use a car and driver, or an app cab, for the church, JK Temple and stadium: they are spread across the city and pavements are poor.
  • The JK Temple needs you to leave handbags in the cloakroom and go through a security check, so travel light and carry only what you need.
  • The metro avoids road traffic on the central stretch, but check how far each station is from your sight, and the steps down, before a long walk with parents.
  • In December and January, fog can delay trains and flights, so build a spare day into onward connections.
  • Water, a hat and a light cotton wrap help more than anything else; bottled water is easy to find.
