Before you go

Kanpur with elderly parents: what to know

  • Do outdoor sights before 11 am from March to June and take a long rest in the afternoon; May highs average above 40 C.
  • Use a car and driver, or an app cab, for the church, JK Temple and stadium: they are spread across the city and pavements are poor.
  • The JK Temple needs you to leave handbags in the cloakroom and go through a security check, so travel light and carry only what you need.
  • The metro avoids road traffic on the central stretch, but check how far each station is from your sight, and the steps down, before a long walk with parents.
  • In December and January, fog can delay trains and flights, so build a spare day into onward connections.
  • Water, a hat and a light cotton wrap help more than anything else; bottled water is easy to find.

Easiest first

Places in Kanpur sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (5)

  • JK Temple (Places of worship · 1–1.5 hours) — The campus is tree-filled and mostly level, with shade and a high-roofed hall. We could not verify wheelchair ramps or seating. Expect a short queue at the security check and crowds on Janmashtami.
  • Kanpur Memorial Church (Places of worship · 45–60 minutes) — The church and its garden are on level ground with paved paths, and the garden has an approach through a single gateway. We could not verify seating, ramps or toilets, so ask on arrival and use a car to the door.
  • Moti Jheel (Places to visit · 45–60 minutes) — The lakeside paths are level and the park has shaded spots. We could not verify benches or toilets. Use the metro or a cab and keep the visit short in warm months.
  • Nana Rao Park (Places to visit · 1 hour) — The park is level with paved paths and shade, which makes it comfortable for older visitors. We could not verify benches or toilets, so bring water and ask on arrival.
  • Phool Bagh and Kanpur Sangrahalaya (Culture and craft · 1 hour) — The park is level and shaded, which suits older visitors. We could not verify lifts, ramps or seating in the museum, so ask at the entrance.

Some walking — plan a break (5)

  • Bhitargaon Temple (Places to visit · Half a day including the drive) — Roads to the village can be slow and the site has little in the way of shade or seating that we could verify. The temple is best seen from ground level, so older visitors do not need to climb. Plan a car and carry water.
  • Green Park Stadium (Sports · Half a day for a match; not otherwise a sight) — Match days mean crowds, security checks and long walks from the road. Older travellers should arrange a seat in a stand with a roof if possible, and book a car to the gate. We could not verify access features.
  • Kanpur Zoological Park (Places to visit · 3–4 hours) — The zoo is large, with long walks between enclosures and little shade in summer. Older visitors should use the toy train, take rests and avoid the afternoon in warm months. We could not verify wheelchair access.
  • Massacre Ghat (Sati Chaura Ghat) (Places to visit · 30–45 minutes) — Steps lead down to the river and the ground is uneven. We could not verify seating or rails. Older visitors may prefer to view the ghat from the top of the steps and not go down.
  • Naveen Market (Shopping · 1–2 hours) — The market is crowded and traffic is heavy around it, with uneven pavements. Seating is limited. Older visitors should go at a quiet hour and use the nearby metro station, then take a cab back.

Small decisions

Practical tips for Kanpur

  • Heat. From April to June, daily highs average between 37 and 40 C. Visit early, rest indoors from noon to four, and drink water regularly.
  • Winter fog. December and January can bring heavy fog in the Kanpur area, delaying trains and flights. Avoid tight connections on the day you leave.
  • Getting around. App cabs and autos cover most routes. The Orange Line metro runs from IIT Kanpur to Kanpur Central, so it is useful for the central stretch. Confirm the fare for any auto before you set off.
  • Walking. Pavements are narrow and broken in places, so wear closed shoes and expect to share the road with traffic.
  • Temple rules. At the JK Temple, photography is not allowed, bags are left in a cloakroom and visitors are searched. Check the current opening hours before a visit.
  • 1857 sites. The church garden, Nana Rao Park and Massacre Ghat relate to a painful history. Dress modestly, keep voices low and avoid posed photos.
  • Money. Carry small notes for autos and entry tickets, and use UPI where shops accept it. Ask for a bill when buying leather goods.
  • Cricket days. On match days at Green Park Stadium, roads around Civil Lines close or slow down. Allow extra time and consider the metro.
