The short answer

Phool Bagh and Kanpur Sangrahalaya: what visitors should know first

Worth a short stop if you like local history and are already in the centre. The hall is a colonial building and the park hosts public events. We could not verify the museum's current displays, so check opening times before you go.

History and context

The story behind Phool Bagh and Kanpur Sangrahalaya

The hall began as the King Edward Memorial (K.E.M.) Hall, built in memory of Edward's 1876 visit to Kanpur as Prince of Wales, funded by European and Indian merchants. Work stalled during World War I, when the unfinished hall housed wounded soldiers, and it was completed in 1918. After independence it was renamed Gandhi Bhawan.

The park was once known as Queen Victoria Garden or Queen's Park. It is now run by the Kanpur Municipal Corporation.

Why it matters

Why Phool Bagh and Kanpur Sangrahalaya is worth your time

Phool Bagh is where Kanpur's public life happened. Since the early twentieth century it has hosted rallies and meetings, and Mahatma Gandhi, Indira Gandhi, Ram Manohar Lohia and Atal Bihari Vajpayee have all spoken there. The hall at its centre, built as a memorial to a royal visit, was renamed Gandhi Bhawan after 1947, which shows how the city reclaimed its colonial buildings.

The museum inside is a modest civic one, and is best treated as a short stop inside a longer walk through the centre. Its value is as much in the building and park as in the displays.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Start with the park itself, officially Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Udyan but still widely called Phool Bagh. It sits in the middle of the city near Kanpur Central station and Nana Rao Park, and has served as a place for public meetings since the early twentieth century.

The focus is Gandhi Bhawan, the old King Edward Memorial hall, built to mark Edward's 1876 visit as Prince of Wales. It was completed in 1918 and renamed after independence. Part of the building now holds a municipal library and the Kanpur Sangrahalaya, the city museum. Go to the museum to see what is on display, and ask at the entrance about the collection and opening times, because we could not confirm them.

After the museum, take a gentle walk under the trees. The park is a short distance from Nana Rao Park, so the two make an easy pair.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.
