Kapurthala is a small town in the Doaba region of Punjab, between Jalandhar and Amritsar, with a history far larger than its size. The town was founded in 1743 by Jassa Singh Ahluwalia and became the capital of the princely state of Kapurthala. Its best-known ruler, Maharaja Jagatjit Singh, was a Francophile who hoped to build a 'Paris of the East', and the legacy is a scatter of unexpected buildings: a Versailles-inspired palace, a mosque modelled on one in Marrakesh and a classical-revival club.
The town is best treated as a half-day to one-day visit, ideally from Jalandhar or Amritsar. Many of the palaces now house schools, so you see them from outside. The Moorish Mosque, Shalimar Gardens and the Panch Mandir are easier to enter, and Kanjli Wetland, a Ramsar site, gives a change of pace in winter when migratory birds arrive.
It is also a gentle place for older travellers: distances are short, sights are mostly level and the pace is slow. The district matters to Sikh pilgrims too. Sultanpur Lodhi, about 27 km away, is where Guru Nanak is said to have lived for years, and Gurdwara Ber Sahib there was financed by the same maharaja. Families can add the Pushpa Gujral Science City on the Jalandhar road.
Do not expect a tourist-ready town with a big hotel scene. Plan around a car and driver from a larger city, check locally what is open, and treat Kapurthala as a short, thoughtful stop rather than a destination for several days.
