History and context

The story behind Kanjli Wetland

Wikipedia dates the Kanjli headworks to 1870, built across the Kali Bein, a Beas tributary, for irrigation. The wetland was designated a Ramsar site on 22 January 2002. The Kali Bein rises near Dhanoa in Hoshiarpur district. Local tradition associates the river with Guru Nanak's disappearance and return in Sultanpur Lodhi, as recounted in Wikipedia.

Why it matters

Why Kanjli Wetland is worth your time

Kanjli is one of the few places near Kapurthala that is about landscape rather than architecture. It was created in 1870 when headworks were built across the Kali Bein to supply irrigation, and it became a wetland of about 490 hectares, with the lake itself covering around 184 hectares. Recognition as a Ramsar wetland of international importance on 22 January 2002 reflects its value for water birds.

For a visitor, that history means the place is a working water body as well as a picnic spot. It gives a break from the formal gardens and palaces, and puts the town in its river setting. The Kali Bein is also central to the Guru Nanak narrative that draws pilgrims to nearby Sultanpur Lodhi.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Reach the wetland by car or auto from Kapurthala, a short drive of about 4 km. Start early in winter, when mist lies on the water and migratory ducks and geese are present. Walk the embankment slowly and look for resident birds such as the grey francolin and alexandrine parakeet, with a pair of binoculars if you have one.

Wikipedia notes more than 40 resident and 16 migratory species recorded here, including pintail, mallard, wigeon and black-winged stilt. Boating and fishing facilities exist; whether a boat is running on the day is something to check on arrival. The old Villa Buena Vista, a retreat of the maharajas on the bank, remains in private hands, so appreciate it from outside.

The site is also linked in tradition with the Kali Bein, where Guru Nanak is said to have gone missing for three days before declaring there was no Hindu and no Muslim. This makes a quiet stop for a family that also plans to visit Sultanpur Lodhi.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.
