Plan 01
1 day in Karwar
- 01
Day 1: Beach, museum and river sunset
Begin at Rabindranath Tagore Beach in the morning while it is cool, and walk the promenade to the bust of the poet. Visit the INS Chapal warship museum on the sand within its opening hours. Have a seafood thali for lunch in town and rest through the hottest hours. In the late afternoon, cross the Kali River to Sadashivgad hill for the fort ruins and the view over the river mouth, then watch the sunset from the riverside before dinner.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Rabindranath Tagore Beach 1-2 hours, longer at sunset Easy Early morning or late afternoon; November to February for dry weather INS Chapal Warship Museum 30-45 minutes Moderate Open hours only; morning or late afternoon Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.
With parents at INS Chapal Warship Museum: Access is by steps up to and inside the boat, with narrow passages and low doorways. It is not suitable for those who struggle with stairs or confined spaces. The area around it on the beach is level.

Day 2: Devbagh and the islands
Drive to Devbagh in the morning for the casuarina-lined beach and a walk along the sand. If the sea is calm and a licensed operator is running, take a boat trip towards Kurumgad island, or simply spend the day at Devbagh. Return for an early dinner in town.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Kurumgad Island Half a day including the boat transfer Demanding November to February, in calm weather; January for the festival Pace: Kurumgad Island involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.
With parents at Kurumgad Island: Boarding and landing involve stepping between a jetty and a small boat, and the temple is reached by a climb on a forested hillside. This is not recommended for anyone with limited mobility or balance.

Guides for the stops on these routes
Pacing
Pacing a Karwar trip for parents and children
- Tagore Beach, its promenade and the INS Chapal museum are level and easy; this is the best place to spend the hottest part of the day on a bench by the sea.
- Island boat trips involve stepping between a jetty and a small boat. Insist on life jackets, travel only with licensed operators and in calm weather, and skip the trip if mobility is a concern.
- Sadashivgad has a vehicle road close to the top, but the ruins themselves are uneven. Go late afternoon, and wear shoes with grip.
- Humidity is high all year, and even in winter the daytime highs sit in the early thirties. Plan outdoor sights for early morning and late afternoon.
- Some beaches and islands near the naval base are closed to the public, even where a map shows a road. Ask your hotel or a local driver before heading out.
- There is no airport in town: allow two to three hours from Goa's Dabolim by road, and arrange the pickup before you travel.
