Before you go

Karwar with elderly parents: what to know

  • Tagore Beach, its promenade and the INS Chapal museum are level and easy; this is the best place to spend the hottest part of the day on a bench by the sea.
  • Island boat trips involve stepping between a jetty and a small boat. Insist on life jackets, travel only with licensed operators and in calm weather, and skip the trip if mobility is a concern.
  • Sadashivgad has a vehicle road close to the top, but the ruins themselves are uneven. Go late afternoon, and wear shoes with grip.
  • Humidity is high all year, and even in winter the daytime highs sit in the early thirties. Plan outdoor sights for early morning and late afternoon.
  • Some beaches and islands near the naval base are closed to the public, even where a map shows a road. Ask your hotel or a local driver before heading out.
  • There is no airport in town: allow two to three hours from Goa's Dabolim by road, and arrange the pickup before you travel.

Easiest first

Places in Karwar sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (3)

  • Devbagh Beach (Places to visit · Half a day) — The sand is gentle and the grove gives shade, but there are few benches and the resort is the main facility. A short drive or boat crossing is needed to arrive. Soft sand is tiring for some.
  • Karwar fish thali (Food and restaurants · About 1 hour) — Most places are simple, ground-level restaurants, with fixed tables and fans or air-conditioning, and no steps in many. Fish bones are the main hazard for children and older diners, so go carefully.
  • Rabindranath Tagore Beach (Places to visit · 1-2 hours, longer at sunset) — The promenade and the area beside the museum are level, with places to sit and food stalls nearby. Walking on soft sand is tiring, so stay on the paved stretch. Midday is hot and humid, so choose morning or evening.

Some walking — plan a break (2)

  • INS Chapal Warship Museum (Places to visit · 30-45 minutes) — Access is by steps up to and inside the boat, with narrow passages and low doorways. It is not suitable for those who struggle with stairs or confined spaces. The area around it on the beach is level.
  • Sadashivgad Fort (Places to visit · 1.5-2 hours) — A road reaches near the top, but the ruins and paths are uneven and have steps. There is little shade, so avoid midday. Wear shoes with grip and bring water. Not recommended for anyone with serious mobility problems.

Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (1)

  • Kurumgad Island (Places to visit · Half a day including the boat transfer) — Boarding and landing involve stepping between a jetty and a small boat, and the temple is reached by a climb on a forested hillside. This is not recommended for anyone with limited mobility or balance.

Small decisions

Practical tips for Karwar

  • Humidity and heat. Highs stay in the low to mid thirties nearly all year. Plan sightseeing for the early morning and late afternoon, wear light cotton, and drink water regularly.
  • Monsoon. June to September brings very heavy rain, and sea trips are usually off. If you travel then, treat it as a green-season stay indoors and do not book boat trips in advance.
  • Boat trips. Use only licensed operators, insist on life jackets for everyone, and check the weather and sea conditions on the day. Island trips can be cancelled at short notice.
  • Naval areas. Karwar hosts a major naval base, and some beaches and islands are closed to the public. Do not assume a map route is open; ask a local driver or your hotel.
  • Getting around. Autos and taxis cover the town. For Devbagh, Sadashivgad and Gokarna, a car with driver is easier. Agree the fare before leaving.
  • Swimming. Swim only where locals do, in daylight, and keep children close; currents can be strong near the river mouth and under tidal flow. Wikivoyage also warns of quicksand around Devbagh.
  • Money and cash. Cash is useful for autos, small restaurants and beach stalls. Carry small notes, and withdraw in town before heading to Devbagh or the beaches.
  • Dress and respect. Dress modestly away from the beach, and remove footwear at temples and the dargah on Sadashivgad hill. Ask before photographing people, and avoid photographing naval installations.
